Listen Unbound is genuinely free. Not "free for 30 days." Not "free for one book a month." Free forever, with no credit system and no subscription tier.

This is possible because every title in the library comes from Project Gutenberg's public-domain catalog. There are no publisher licensing fees to pass on to you. The cost to run the app is covered by short pre-roll ads on listening sessions — that's it.

Compare that to Audible ($15.95/month for one credit), Scribd ($11.99/month), or even Libby, which requires a library card and often has multi-week waiting lists for popular titles. Listen Unbound's entire catalog is available to every user, every day, all the time.

Every audiobook in Listen Unbound is narrated using the Pocket TTS engine, a neural text-to-speech system that generates natural-sounding speech from text. The results are genuinely listenable — not the robotic, monotone synthesis you might remember from older TTS systems.

For classic literature, the engine's strengths line up well with what the texts need: it handles long, complex sentences smoothly, pauses correctly at em-dashes and semicolons, and manages the slightly formal register of Victorian and Edwardian prose without sounding stilted.

We pre-process each book before generating audio: chapters are detected and labeled, opening and closing matter is separated, and any OCR artifacts from the Gutenberg source text are cleaned up. This means the narration doesn't read out footnote numbers or section headers as if they were part of the story.

The result isn't identical to a professional human narrator — and we won't pretend it is. But it's more than good enough for casual listening, and for many users it's preferable to narrators who make strong interpretive choices that don't match how they hear the characters in their heads.

Every title in the library can be downloaded to your iPhone for offline playback. Tap the download button on any book's detail page and the app queues each chapter's audio file for local storage. You can monitor download progress from a dedicated downloads screen.

Offline is the right mode for travel. Audiobooks on planes, subways, mountain trails, or any other situation where a cellular signal is intermittent or expensive. Downloaded books sit in your private app storage — they don't count toward iCloud storage, and they persist until you choose to delete them.

Typical download size is 50 MB to 180 MB per book, depending on length. A short novel like The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde downloads in seconds on Wi-Fi; a long one like Moby Dick or War and Peace takes a minute or two. You can start listening immediately during a download — the app streams the beginning while the rest downloads in the background.

To create an account or sign in, you enter your email address and receive a single-use link in your inbox. Tap the link and you're authenticated. No password to create, no password to store, no "forgot my password" dead end.

This isn't just a convenience feature — it's a meaningful security improvement over passwords. There's no password to reuse across sites, no password to have phished, and no password database on our end that could be breached. Your email address is the authenticator.

Magic links expire after a short window (typically 15 minutes) and can only be used once. If someone intercepts your link after you've used it, it's invalid. If a link expires before you tap it, request a new one — it takes two seconds.

Your account syncs your library across devices. Download a book on one iPhone, and your progress and library state are available when you sign in on another device. (Full cross-device resume sync is coming in a future update.)

The free version of Listen Unbound plays a short pre-roll ad at the start of each listening session. These ads keep the app sustainable and free for everyone. They're brief — typically 15 to 30 seconds — and they only appear at the start of a session, not in the middle of a chapter.

If you'd rather not hear ads, a one-time in-app purchase removes them permanently. Pay once, no recurring charge, no annual renewal. This is an honest business model: you're paying for a better experience, not for access to content you're already entitled to.

The remove-ads purchase is tied to your Apple ID. If you reinstall the app or get a new phone, tap "Restore Purchases" and it comes back at no charge.

Listen Unbound is built entirely in SwiftUI, Apple's modern declarative UI framework, with SwiftData for local persistence. This means the app is fast, uses standard iOS navigation patterns, and integrates naturally with the operating system — the media player controls work correctly in the Lock Screen and Control Center, the audio session behaves properly when calls come in, and the app respects your system settings for text size and accessibility.

We chose to go iOS-only for now because building a great mobile audiobook player requires tight integration with platform audio APIs. A cross-platform web wrapper wouldn't give us the control we need over buffering, background playback, and interrupt handling. When the iOS version is solid, an Android version is on the roadmap.
