How It Works
From zero to listening in under a minute โ no password, no subscription, no hassle.
Getting Started
Five steps to your first audiobook
Download the app from the App Store
Listen Unbound is a free iOS app available on the App Store. Download it to your iPhone โ no upfront cost, no credit card required. The app is about 15 MB and installs in seconds.
Sign in with a magic link โ no password needed
Open the app and enter your email address. Within a few seconds, you'll receive an email containing a one-tap sign-in link. Tap that link and you're logged in โ no password to create, remember, or reset.
Browse the library and pick a title
Once you're in, you'll see the full library: hundreds of classic works organized by genre, popularity, and author. Every title includes a cover, a description, and a chapter count so you know what you're getting into before you start.
Not sure what to pick? The library includes beloved standbys like Frankenstein, Pride and Prejudice, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, alongside lesser-known gems like The Island of Doctor Moreau and Marcus Aurelius's Meditations.
Stream immediately or download for offline listening
Tap any title to open its detail page. Hit Play and it starts streaming right away โ no loading bar, no buffering spinner. The audio is served from the cloud in compressed chunks, so even a modest LTE connection handles it smoothly.
If you want to listen without a data connection โ on a plane, in the subway, on a road trip โ tap Download. The book saves to your device and plays back entirely from local storage. Downloaded books don't expire; they stay on your device until you delete them.
Listen ad-supported for free, or remove ads with one purchase
By default, Listen Unbound plays a short pre-roll ad at the start of a listening session. This keeps the app free for everyone. If you'd prefer an uninterrupted experience, a one-time in-app purchase removes ads permanently โ no subscription, no renewal, no hidden fees. Pay once, done.
Either way, you have access to the full library. The ad-free purchase doesn't unlock new content; it just removes the ads. Every title is available to every user, free.
About the Narration
Why AI narration works well for classic literature
Listen Unbound uses a high-quality text-to-speech engine โ specifically the Pocket TTS engine โ tuned for the cadence of literary prose. Early-generation TTS narration sounded robotic and flat, but modern neural voice synthesis has crossed a threshold where most listeners find it natural and easy to follow.
Classic literature is actually a particularly good fit for TTS narration for a few reasons:
- Formal prose reads cleanly. Victorian and Edwardian writing tends toward complete sentences with clear punctuation, which gives a TTS engine reliable signals for pacing and intonation.
- The words are the point. Unlike modern genre fiction with heavy dialect or accented dialogue, most public-domain classics rely on vocabulary and sentence structure for their effect โ which TTS handles well.
- Pronunciation of proper nouns. The TTS engine is trained on a large corpus that includes classical names โ Raskolnikov, Ahab, Dorian, Odysseus โ and pronounces them accurately.
We've listened to every title in the catalog to verify quality before publishing it. If a chapter has rendering artifacts or mispronunciations that affect comprehension, we re-generate it before it goes live.
